This remake is okay. It does feel a lot more of a direct copy of the original with a few twists that (bizarrely) make it much more conventional. I think I prefer the way this one is made but still prefer what happens in the original.Basically two girls meet the wrong kind of people, get raped and killed. By a weird twist of fate the killers end up at the parent's home. Once their cover is blown retribution is amusingly carried out.The rape in this film is, as usual, problematic. If militant feminists are to be believed then men are rapists and this probably isn’t helped if men keep making films with gratuitous rape scenes like this. I found the camera rather lingered on the girls ass which gave me a schadenboner. Seriously though, the scene is ill thought out and would have had more impact if it was shot from the eyes of the killer’s son who we’re supposed to be empathising with. Sounds obvious but filming a rape that sexualises the body rather than demonising the threat and horror was a bad move. You should see this if you like Breaking Bad. One of the sleazy killers is played by Jesse Pinkman. He plays Frank who, in the original you’ll remember, has his penis bitten off by the mother. Clearly, there is no way in this remake that the character arc for the mother can lead this situation to occur so instead we get a much more interesting domesticated murder. She bashes him over the head with a wine bottle (very middle class), attempts to drown him in the kitchen sink, destroys his hand in the garbage disposal, etc. Oh and extra minus marks for having a Face/Off ending. You know, the “oh my child died so I just got a new one, everything is happy now”. Also, FYI, if you haven’t got the character development to get a mother to bite the penis off a man who was involved with the rape and attempted murder of your daughter then you certainly can’t get away with a sequence of paralysing a man from the neck down and putting his head in a microwave.3/10
